New Delhi, December 19, 2024 – The Central Government has unveiled the second phase of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U 2.0), an ambitious housing scheme targeting one crore urban families. The program, approved by the Union Cabinet on August 9, aims to construct one lakh new houses over five years with a substantial subsidy of ₹2.50 lakh per unit.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban is the government’s flagship program to provide housing for all urban residents by 2029. The scheme aligns with India’s commitment to sustainable urban development and social equality.
Key Features of the PMAY 2.0 Scheme
- Central Government rolls out PMAY-Urban 2.0, targeting affordable housing solutions for urban poor families
- Cabinet-approved initiative plans to construct 1 lakh houses over 5 years, following August 9, 2024 clearance
- Comprehensive scheme benefits multiple groups including slum residents, SC/ST communities, minorities, and other vulnerable sections
The initiative, commencing September 1, 2024, focuses on providing all-weather pucca houses to eligible urban residents. “This scheme represents a significant step toward inclusive urban development,” said a senior Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs official.
PMAY-U 2.0 operates through four main verticals:
- Beneficiary-Led Construction
- Affordable Housing in Partnership
- Affordable Rental Housing
- Interest Subsidy Scheme
Eligibility Requirements
The scheme targets three income categories:
- Economically Weaker Section (EWS): Annual income up to ₹3 lakh
- Low Income Group (LIG): Annual income up to ₹6 lakh
- Middle Income Group (MIG): Annual income up to ₹9 lakh
Priority beneficiaries include:
- Slum dwellers
- SC/ST communities
- Minorities
- Widows
- Women
- Persons with disabilities
