Shah, who is the son of India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, was picked unanimously by the ICC Board of Directors. He takes over from New Zealand’s Greg Barclay, who did not want to continue for a third term.

The new ICC boss has some urgent matters to handle, especially sorting out the Champions Trophy tournament issue. The main problem is about where Pakistan will host their matches, with talks of using a ‘Hybrid Model’ where India would play their matches in Dubai.

Shah becomes the fifth Indian to get cricket’s top job. Before him, famous Indian administrators like Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, Shashank Manohar and N Srinivasan have led the ICC.

Apart from the Champions Trophy matter, Shah will also work on making cricket more popular and profitable as an Olympic sport. Having successfully run BCCI as its secretary for five years, Shah brings valuable experience to his new role as the world cricket chief.

With less than 100 days left for the Champions Trophy, Shah’s immediate task will be to work with both BCCI and Pakistan Cricket Board to find a solution that makes everyone happy.
