New Delhi, Dec 9, 2024 – In a significant development for higher education admissions in India, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar announced today that major changes will be implemented in the Central University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate and postgraduate programs starting in the 2025 academic year.
According to Chairman Kumar, the CUET-UG and PG exam syllabus and structure will undergo a comprehensive review and update next year based on recommendations from an expert committee set up by the UGC to evaluate the exam process. The aim is to enhance the testing experience, logistics, and alignment with the latest curricula.

“Based on feedback from past years, it is essential to continuously improve the examination to provide a better, more efficient and conducive environment for students taking CUET,” Kumar stated. “The expert committee has examined various aspects such as the test structure, number and duration of papers, syllabus alignment and operational logistics. The commission has considered these recommendations.”
As a next step, the UGC plans to release a draft proposal detailing the revised CUET guidelines for 2025, and will invite feedback and suggestions from key stakeholders including students, parents, teachers and higher education institutions before finalizing the changes.
The move comes after the first edition of CUET-UG in 2022 faced technical glitches, as well as challenges with score normalization across multiple test shifts for the same subject. This year, the exam was conducted for the first time in hybrid mode but had to be cancelled last-minute in Delhi due to logistical issues.
With the upcoming overhaul, the UGC aims to iron out past problems and establish CUET as a high-quality, standardized entrance exam for admissions to central universities across India. The revised exam is expected to be implemented for the 2025 admission cycle.
