The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to announce Delhi’s next chief minister following its landmark victory in the state assembly elections. The party’s legislative meeting on February 19 will determine who will lead the capital territory, with the oath-taking ceremony scheduled for February 20 at Ramlila Maidan.
The BJP secured a commanding majority by winning 48 out of 70 assembly seats, marking its return to power in Delhi after nearly three decades. Several prominent leaders have emerged as potential candidates for the chief ministerial position.
Leading Contenders
Parvesh Verma has emerged as a frontrunner after defeating AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. The son of former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma, he brings significant political experience from both state and national politics.
Other strong contenders include:
- Vijender Gupta, who secured his third consecutive victory from Rohini
- Satish Upadhyay, former Delhi BJP president and winner from Malviya Nagar
- Virendra Sachdeva, current Delhi BJP president who led the party’s successful campaign
- Harish Khurana, son of former CM Madan Lal Khurana
“The central leadership will decide on the chief ministerial candidate,” stated Virendra Sachdeva following the party’s victory.
Political analysts note that the BJP might follow its recent pattern of selecting lesser-known candidates, as seen in other states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Additional names in consideration include Pawan Sharma, Ashish Sood, Rekha Gupta, and Shikha Rai.
The selection of Delhi’s new chief minister holds particular significance as it represents the BJP’s return to power in the national capital after 27 years. The chosen leader will face the challenge of fulfilling the party’s campaign promises and managing one of India’s most important metropolitan regions.
The oath-taking ceremony at Ramlila Maidan is scheduled for 10 AM on February 20, marking the beginning of a new political era in Delhi’s governance.
