In a historic development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Rekha Gupta as Delhi’s new Chief Minister, making her the fourth woman to hold this prestigious position and currently the only female Chief Minister in any BJP-ruled state or Union Territory.
The 50-year-old leader’s appointment was confirmed during a BJP legislature party meeting, with her oath-taking ceremony scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Supporters celebrated the announcement outside her Shalimar Bagh residence with traditional dhols and festive slogans.
Political Journey and Background
Born in Haryana’s Jind district, Gupta’s political career began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College in 1993. Her leadership capabilities emerged early as she served as DUSU’s general secretary (1995-1996) and president (1996-1997).
“I am extremely excited and am looking forward to supporting my wife,” said Manish Gupta, the CM-designate’s husband, speaking to reporters amid the celebrations.

After two unsuccessful attempts in 2015 and 2020, Gupta secured victory in the recent Assembly elections, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by 29,595 votes. Her persistence and growing political influence marked this significant triumph.
